George A. Malcolm George A. Malcolm was born in 1880 and became a Fairfax County Deputy Sheriff in 1904. He was the Head Teacher of the Lorton Valley School in Lorton Virginia. George Malcolm was also the Deputy Treasurer of the Mount Vernon and Lee District. In April of 1905 female students were being harrassed by a Italian immigrant working at the Lorton Railroad station.Deputy Malcolm and two other deputies went to the railroad station and attempted to arrest the suspect. The suspect pulled out a .48 caliber handgun and shot Malcolm five times. He was struck in the abdomen, hip and hand. Malcolm was sent to the Emergency Hospital in Washington D.C . The next day a Posse of citizens went to the Railroad station to arrest the suspect. The suspect was found and while resisting arrest he was shot in the head. Both the suspect and Deputy Malcolm died of thier injuries on April 7 1905. Malcolm was 24 years of age at the time and left behind a mother and brother. He is buried at the Pohick Church Cemetery in Lorton Virgina. George A. Malcolm's name will be added to the Law Enforcement Memorial wall this May in recognition of his sacrifice in the line of duty. His memory was honored by the Sheriff's Office and family on the 100th anniversary of his death. Deputy Malcolm is the first officer reported to die in the line of duty in the 263 years of the Sheriff's Office history. |
